Supporting Your Pet Through Hospice Care

Hospice care focuses on comfort and quality of life rather than a cure. For pets living with terminal or chronic conditions, it offers a gentle way to manage symptoms, reduce suffering, and spend meaningful time together in a familiar setting.

At Crossway Veterinary Housecalls, we believe hospice is about presence. Being there for your pet when they need you most. Our veterinary team visits your home to evaluate your pet’s condition and provide personalized recommendations. We monitor pain, adjust medications, support mobility, and offer ways to keep your pet clean, comfortable, and calm.

Some pets can enjoy weeks, months, or even longer with the right care. Others may decline more quickly. Either way, we are here to offer guidance and support without pressure.

We also help families recognize signs of suffering and prepare for the next steps with grace and readiness.

Is It Time to Say Goodbye?

No one can tell you exactly when the time is right to say goodbye. But we can help you understand your pet’s quality of life and how to interpret the changes you are seeing.

Ask yourself the following:

Is my pet still eating and drinking on their own?

Do they respond to me or show interest in their environment?

Are they comfortable lying down, or do they seem restless and unable to settle?

Do they cry out, shake, pant, or pace when not active?

Are they able to stand, walk, or get up without pain?

Is incontinence becoming frequent?

Have they lost a significant amount of weight?

If you answered yes to several of these, it may be time to speak with a veterinarian. Our team can help evaluate your pet’s comfort and talk with you about what options remain.

There is no judgment and no expectation. Just support.

Is It Time to Say Goodbye?

What to Expect During In-Home Euthanasia

When the time comes to say goodbye, many families find peace in being at home. There are no loud waiting rooms, no unfamiliar smells, and no rushed goodbyes. Your pet remains in their safe space, surrounded by the people and objects they love most.

Our veterinary team arrives at your home at a scheduled time. We begin by discussing the process with you and answering any last questions.

A sedative is administered first. This ensures your pet is fully relaxed and unaware before the final injection. Once asleep, the euthanasia medication is given. This is completely painless. Your pet simply drifts into a deeper sleep and then passes away peacefully.

Families often choose a favorite location: a bed, couch, soft blanket, or shaded spot in the yard. We work with you to create the setting that feels most comforting and respectful.

You are welcome to hold your pet, talk to them, and be present in every moment. We stay with you through it all, quietly and respectfully.

Cremation and Aftercare Support

If you would like your pet cremated, we can help connect you with trusted local cremation providers. Most often, they arrive before we leave your home to ensure a seamless transition.

Options include cremation with ashes returned or without. We recommend discussing aftercare arrangements in advance if possible, so you can focus fully on your pet and family during the visit.

Because our mobile clinic contains a surgical suite, we are not able to transport your pet’s remains. However, we will work closely with the cremation team to ensure respectful handling.
